How many people remember that the thin silver lines on the rear panel swoosh meant the car was a Bel Air, not the run-of-the-mill 1957 Chevy? It often was a model of its own, but like the 1957 Chevy, the 1958 Impala had an upscale Bel Air model.

For Viper its simple... it got from fairly affordable super car performance simple car without driver aids... to expensive , supercar like performance like car with electronic nanny watching your every move.... it got boring and expensive like any other high performance car these days. When you take x factor out of anything... that thing becomes not worth your time nor money. People will rather get 30 to 40k low mileage mid 90's Viper than new one that costs 150k to 200k I mean .. you could burn your leg on exhaust just from getting out from the car if you where dummy .. was an bit of an animal on rain with those huge tires and ancient suspension layout, but hey... weeded out the unskilled drivers who had no brains and more enthusiasm than skill with loud pedal.

Problem with the viper is they not only focused on the viper fans in their "advertisements" and they did not appeal to a broad market overall. In fact for the first year or so of the cars release, you couldn't even customize the car virtually on the dodge website. If you wanted to see what colors were available as a customer you had to look over a PDF file. Now if you wanted an "physical sample" you had to go to select dealerships to see the color pallet. I never owned a car that costs more than $40k but I imagine when you are buying something in the $100k neighborhood you would want the "ferrari" experience. As in if I look at a comparable GT car for any of the exotic car manufacturers and I look at yours, they should at least be on the same level (e.g., I want to customize the car online). Dodge got further screwed when GM unveiled the C7 Z06 which is why they cut the price to stay competitive but that stil didn't save them. Hell now customers had the option to buy a car which made similar HP in automatic and you could customize it online. This leads to my final point, the car was only offered stick and this was during an era where virtually everyone was reporting downturn in sales for stick cars. If I was Ralph Gilles (head of SRT), I would have marketed the dodge viper to everyone and i would have spent money making the customizing experience be flawless. Like in the unveiling they called in turn10 (maker of Forza motorsport) in the unveiling. Why not loop them in to help with the redesign the online customizing function of the dodge website for this car. Then i would have offered a V8 option and a V10 option with both stick and manual. Now I know the viper fans would have been upset by both of those things, but this would have allowed the car to come in at a lower price point and it would have allowed more adoption from a consumer point of view. Also i would have modernized the V10 a bit more, made it an aluminum block as a opposed to the literal same engine from the Gen 4. Now i know there was some hmm shall we say "restrictions" dodge had to deal with. For instance, Fiat owned dodge and ferrari and I know from close sources at the time that ferrari was concerned with the viper because it had the ability to make their F12 berlinetta look bad. Trade off was ferrari allowed dodge to use its interior design house for the styling of the dodge viper in exchange dodge stayed clear of ferrari's performance benchmark. Now this was never confirmed and am sure dodge would deny this but fi you think bout it it makes sense. With that said, take this last paragraph with a grain of salt, I dont know for certain but this is what i heard.
