Why Everyone Wanted the Worst Car in the World
The Yugo is widely regarded as the worst car ever. It was poorly constructed, nowhere near reliable, and not so easy on the eyes. The Yugo was the butt of every joke and the junker in every garage. But for all its shortcomings, it sold like hotcakes when it arrived in the U.S. In this episode of Wheelhouse, Nolan tells the story of the Yugo's creation and makes the case for updating its reputation from worst car to huge success.

So I definitely got a big part of this story wrong: the assertion that Yugoslavia was part of the Soviet Union. This Is incorrect. In the West, this assumption can be traced back to Yugoslavia’s formation in 1943. During WWII, the Allies: The US, UK and USSR supported Yugoslavia’s fight against the fascist Axis occupation. We just kinda assumed they stayed allied with the USSR, but that’s not what happened. After the war, relations between Yugoslavia and the USSR fell apart, with Yugoslavia denouncing Stalinism completely and forming its own socialist government. Yugoslavia was in fact on the Western edge of the Iron Curtain, and maintained a delicate balancing act between Western and Eastern bloc countries. According to globalvoices.org “its independence from both the Eastern and the Western blocs was a key feature of its national identity.” I sincerely apologize for the error and for any offense it may have caused; and I will be more diligent and discerning in my research moving forward. Thanks for your time. -Nolan

Interesting facts: Zastava YUGO exists up to 2007 (there are evem some versions with Peugeot 206 1.1L motor, Yugo Koral In L) Zastava had other cars as well, some of them are rare and pretty pricy now, like "Tristać" or Zastava 1300 in real model name Zastava actually means Flag on Serbian You can see Zastava's cars only in Serbia now, very rarely in Bosnia They are not reliable in US, but in Serbia you can find many many parts for less then 5$ and it's like toy for every car enthusiast kid In race track Mišeluk in Novi Sad, there are Yugo races every once in a year You can see tuned Yugos on every car meet, and they look good when tuned.. This list goes further on but let's keep it short..

Why did you remove the most secret ground from the map of Serbia? Did you know that the bells of churches in west sounded in 1389. when they thought we have beaten the Otoman empire on that holy ground where our monasteries still sit under UNESCO protection after more than 500 years. Serbian monasteries in Kosovo and Metohija are older than the discovery of America. You totally need to get back money your parents paid for your geography classes.

I had a Yugo. There, I said it. When I was in college in the year 2001(mature student at 28) I was studying motor mechanics. I had a reconditioned engine from a Fiat Uno turbo(1.3 about 120bhp). The teachers wanted a project for the students to work on, so I suggested putting this engine in the Yugo as it was basically the same size and fit. It went in, we upgraded the brakes and I got that all done for free. The college was happy and so was I. It was really fast but it was also a death trap. When hitting the brakes after awesome exeleration, the rear wheels would come off the ground because there was no weight in the back. :) Oh yeah, and a fiat fanatic I know told me the same guy who designed the VW Golf, designed the Yugo.

I wonder if it was crap like my first car, it was crap because everyone told me it was but they didn’t mind touring Belgium, Netherlands, France and Germany in it. It sure as fuck wasn’t fast or sleek but it was reliable (up until 120,000 miles), I’ll be adamant on this one I never understood the psychology of something that got the job done cheaply and reliably was crap.

That car actually only needed an upgrade. A massive upgrade... of engine (since that engine was 20 y.o. when they started installing it into Yugo) and an interior upgrade with a bit more quality in details (plastics especially). It was light, easy to use and cheap to maintain. Probably the best car for beginner divers. And a convertible version was also cool for youngsters, surfers, camping, tripping,...

2 facts - if yugo had better chassis and stiffer suspension PLUS thicker wheels more widely positioned, it would look swxy to this day - in Serbia the official National Racing League is still being raced in strictly factory-parts-tuned yugo cars. These races look sick, and a 1.3 litre tuned yugo can reach 120mph and I think that is just beautiful. Just google racing class yugo

What was American cars suspention in the 80's? Surely not much better and surely not McPherson / multilink. Are cupholders so important? Car without cupholders is not a car? Do you people know how to change radio station without having presets? Spare tyre next to engine was a brilliant space saving feature, not a reason for a joke. All in all Yugo is a bad car, but most definitively not the worst car ever. Please do your homework better next time. Greetings from Croatia.

Me and my friends got a yugo for first of may,its like fourth of july but in Serbia(and a few other european countries),and damn did the car have the craziest last days ever,my friend rolled over in it, accidentally jump with it and kinda teared off the rear wheels with the whole suspension,he drove back 3miles in reverse(cuz that was the only way possible with the rear wheels getting stuck in the fender if you try to go forward),we made a hole in to the chassis, pulled a chain through the hole and the leaf spring suspension, tied that chain up,and it was ready to roam again. And btw this all happened off road. If you think that doing 50 mph in a yugo is terrifying, you haven't done it off road No alcohol or drugs were involved in this event, but anyone who is from the Balkan will know that this is a lie.

It's a common mistake to think yugo originated form fiat 127.in reality it was fully designed in house. Only similarity is their predecessor, fiat 500, which, in Italy, evolved into fiat 127 and fiat 750 which was built under licence (basically a fiat 500). Yugo itself doesn't have the same chassis length or wheelbase as the fiat 127,which was by the way rear engined.

Yugo is designed to be cheap for production and to be cheap for masses . When Yugo was launched in 1980 , it had ohc motor and 4 wheels independent suspension. Regular version had 1.1 l 55 hp , when standard in USA was 5.7 liter ,150 hp and solid axle , and handle like boat. All Zastava product were merged on fiat technology of that era . Z101 was fiat 128 , cheap small family car , capable to cross African through Sahara fitop.info/build/videot/YKOzqrCUy752yYk

Yugsolavia was not part of the Soviet Block. They sought freedom. They had all kinds of factories. After WW2 they sought allies, partners to help build up their country through deals like the one with Occidental led by Dr. Armand Hammer. In the Warsaw Pact when they had a shortage of of some foods like bananas and citrus fruit, Yugoslavians had more much more. But some wanted to destroy the former Yugoslavia, and so they did, they blew it up and spread toxins.

I will never understand why people in the US think that Yugoslavia was like USSR, poor standard and all but that's actually false. Yugo was a joke in Yugoslavia too, the car was cheap, anyone could afford it. People who wanted a real car had VWs, Peugeots Renaults, Volvos... My folks werent anything special, they bought a new Peugeot back in the 70's, yugo's 'brother' the zastava 101 called 'stojadin' was bought few years later just because my grandfather loved to drive around everywhere, even to the shop 200 metres away for example. Yugoslavia didn't have the standard of living like the west but: 'Jugoslavija je za ostale države istočne Europe bila Amerika.' (Yugoslavia was like US compared to other countries of the eastern block.) isn't said without a reason. Worst of all this is that those countries that Yugoslavia was made of are worse today, except Slovenia and some parts of Croatia(Istria, Dalmatia and Zagreb) and northern part of Serbia.

Yugoslavia was actually a pretty developed country (judging by the cars) because I visited some of them and I've seen tons of abandoned W116, W126, Fiat 125, Fiat 131, Ford Capris, Ford Granadas, Volkswagen Santanas, Peugeot 604 and many more cars that were in the luxury cars. Heck, there were even some Pontiac Grand Prixs, GAZ Volgas, Tatras and Cadillacs on some junkjards. Some of the most popular cars in Yugoslavia WERE luxurious such as the Renault 20/30, Renault 25, Ford Granada, Ford Capri, Ford Scorpio Mk1, Opel Senator, Opel Monza and large Mercedes sedans. So judging by the cars, Yugoslavia (before the Yugoslav War) was a developed country.

Actually this success story was the reason, why this country, where it came from, was destroyed. 3990 US$ was a war declaration to western countries industries. In Germany the slogan for the Yugo advertisement was: Yugo, more car needs no human! In German it sounds even more like a war declaration: "Mehr Auto braucht kein Mensch!"

We had a Yugo when I was growing up. It wasn't that bad of a car, not compared to cars or that day. The design was a solid design from fiat, but the parts had quality issues. Overall it was much better than the 1974 Oldsmobile Omega we traded in on it.

The same scrap happens all over and over again. People just do not have money (or brain) to buy their favorite car and they are forced to buy something what their wallet can handle. So they beat and beat their car because they are unhappy. Every car is possible to keep on good running condition if you spend little time for servicing and understand the car real power. Think it that way, how you like that if somebody beats you all day long. By preventive maintenance that car can drive 1 million kilometers (not f.. rubbish miles). Any old mechanic can fix it. Only modern swapnostics can not figure anything out, because there is no computers.

It was designed by Fiat, and even they didn't want to build the damn thing. There's a reason why those things are called Fix It Again Tony. However it frequently had a rear window defroster so your hands would stay warm while you had to push it in the winter time. But truthfully, it has not actually the worst car I've ever seen. I think Renault took that spot with the appliance. Yugoslavia was never a Soviet Bloc country. It was run by Marshal Tito. He was his own brand of communist. But he was able to keep the croatians, serbians, and the albanians from each other's throat for at least a while. At least until Clinton thought it was important to tell some of them that they should leave their own country.

Yugo was going OK in 1991 making the cabrio and moving to FI in the other models, too. Then NATO bombed the factory! That was really the end. I sold ten used Yugos to the movie company that made "Drowning Mona". Bette Middler, Danny De Vito, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tommy Lee Jones, Neve Campbell and others acted in a fun film. Check it out. My yugo had the optional magnifying windshield. Better to see cars receding ahead.... I still have a stock 1986 1100cc Yugo with air conditioning.

I knew a guy who owned one around 88/89. His window crank fell off because the wire retaining clip broke. I offered to help him fix it with a paper clip. He declined because he didn't want a cheap fix and insisted on a dealer part. I swear the new Yugo clip was a bent paper clip.
