nhra didn't outlaw it but it doesn't have the safety equipment required for the times it runs. (the demon) lots of cars suffer this issue because everyone blows their wad on the car and not safety equipment that is CLEARLY outlined in their rules.

I remember when this "new" long life postal truck was in the news. If you think back to US vehicle build quality in the early '80s it is easy to see why commentaries at the time were highly skeptical that a 20 year lifespan was realistic. As it turned out these trucks did last 20 years. Grumman was the right contractor for the job because at that time they were manufacturing durable delivery vans similar to the UPS/Fedex trucks we see today. For all I know they still do. Now let's jump ahead to 2009 when the trucks were scheduled to be replaced. Can you think of anything else that was going on back then? It has a name. I'll give you a minute. (HINT: it rhymes with "the great recession") So anyway the things needed to be replaced or at least seriously maintained but the part of government that writes checks had decided they no longer want to spend money on the post office and even actively worked to undermine postal service, as crazy as that sounds. Maybe it can finally get handled now and the current government can buy some new trucks, hopefully electric. And Ford has announced there will be an electric version of the transit van.

Actually they need to completely dismantle the postal service because it has become too political . We need to contract mail delivery service out to people that live here in our towns that we know . I remember years ago there were people we knew that had part time jobs using their own vehicles to deliver our mail , one of them was a township policeman another one was a lunch lady at our grade school .

Every one of those contestants are going to suck in the long run. Electric cars and hybrids are still in the "novelty" stage. They suck on horsepower for the average American, the mileage isn't all that great and repairs can be prohibitively expensive not to mention that they don't go very far per charge. The only one of the three that even has half a chance is the Ford transit but even that's shakey at best.

I also think it would be cool when they finally do phase-out the Grumman llv, if they go on sale for the General Public. I would love to replace the Iron Duke 4 cylinder with a high output 4.3 L Vortec V6 out of the S10 Xtreme it would give it more power but it wouldn't be stupid crazy fast plus, it would look like it actually belongs in there.

In some markets the USPS as actually phased out the Grumman llvs for, Mercedes Metris right-hand-drive hand drive vans. My sister just turned down the opportunity to have one on her mail route, it would cost nothing but she would lose her gas money they pay her I believe it was that she got. So she went and bought another Honda Element, that's what she uses on her rural mail route.

Ima estimate that the postal service carries like 95% junk mail. You'd think that spending 9 miles per gallon to have millions of trees cut down, printed as junk mail, shipped by these trucks, and then immediately thrown away would wrankle environmentalists. But not a peep. I've literally gone to the post office to tell them to stop delivering ALL mail to my address. I don't want ANY of it. EVER. As literally 99% of it is junk mail. They said they couldn't do that. Evidently it's their job to give me things that I have to throw away.

I will say that there are some mistakes made in this video. They keep conflating pictures of LLV's with FFV's. LLV's are the vehicles that are more prone to catch on fire. Mostly due the fuel leaks, (cheap hoses on fuel line replacement parts) oil leaks and bad electrical connections at switches. Edit: It has actually been an excellent vehicle. Very easy to work on and pretty reliable for what it's put through.

As a postal worker, my personal hope is for the electric truck. Two big reasons: A: I am sick and fucking tired of driving a truck that is literally so slow it's dangerous(I am convinced the LLV's can't reach 60mph). B: we literally drive MAYBE 20 miles per day total. I don't think a battery mileage of 300 miles is gonna be a problem for us. Oh, and then there's the fact that stopping and starting a gas engine is horrible for its lifespan. Electric motors literally do that as their primary function.

Why would you bet the farm on one massive procurement contract like this, to buy a vehicle that will likely be obsolete in five years? Pretty much every other mail service in the world replaces perhaps 10% of its fleet annually by competitive tender, generally using slightly modified versions of standard mass-produced vans that can be maintained anywhere. That way you have vehicles incorporating the latest available technology, lower unit costs and lower running costs, and if you get a bad batch, you don't go back to that manufacturer.

Dude...I agree with the thesis of this video, but a lot of what you are saying here is inconsistent or untrue. First, you said the LLV was introduced in 1985, then 1986. The vehicle entered regular service in 1987--that's easy to tell. You can tell the build year of any USPS vehicle by looking at the first digit of the vehicle number, and you will never find an LLV with a number that starts with 5 or 6 because they quit making them in 1994. Also, you are talking about the LLV while also showing pictures and video of the FFV, which while it looks similar, is a completely different vehicle based on Ford running gear, and was built in 2000. The mail truck you showed on fire at about 8:22 was one of the newer FFVs, not an LLV. Please--be more careful with numbers and figures before publishing videos.

As someone who works on these, (and as a car enthusiast/fabricator/racer of 30+years) I'll just say that I feel the LLV is one of the greatest vehicles ever made. Don't get me wrong, it does have some significant issues. But you are WAY off base in your video. I read through the comments, and there are plenty of them pointing out how inaccurate your video is. But I'll point out that the truck you show on fire is not even an LLV! It's a Ford Explorer based FFV,(Flex Fuel Vehicle) built in 2000-2001, with a 4.0L V6! (the one you're showing at 5:36 is also an FFV) And the engine ECM in an LLV is not located under the washer bottle. It's inside the driver cabin, inside the dashboard. I have no authority to state why they've been catching on fire, but I've read the results of investigations. It's not a design flaw of the Iron Duke, and it's absolutely not washer fluid shorting out an ECM.
